VIDEO: Langley ‘Basics for Babies’ raised $15K

‘Fill the truck’ campaign needed a second vehicle

While the weather was miserable, it wasn’t enough to deter donors from dropping off contributions during the Basics for Babies Fill The Truck campaign at the Langley events Centre on Sunday, Dec 10.

By the end of the day, $15,000 in cash had been collected, and 93.7 JR Country promotions director Richelle Collins revealed they had to call in a second truck to handle the many donations of toy, diapers, baby formula, baby food, and other items needed by infants.

“Originally they just brought a Sprinter van, and that one filled up within the first hour or so,” Collins told the Langley Advance Times.

“So they brought a big five-ton truck, which we filled half-way.”

Collins admitted to some concern about the impact of the damp and cold on the outdoor event, held in the LEC parking lot.

“You know, the weather was not on our side, and it was pretty cold and wet,” Collins said.

“We were worried people weren’t going to come out, but we were really happy to see everyone, and everyone was really excited to see our all of our JR FM hosts.”

In partnership with Food Banks B.C., the campaign was created to meet the needs of low-income people who are having a hard time with the expenses of raising young children.

Since 1994, the country music station has collected more than $2 million and hundreds of thousands of pounds of needed items to combat a chronic shortage of baby products at Lower Mainland food banks.

People can still also donate directly to food banks in their area, such as the Langley Sources Food Bank and the Langley Food Bank.
