Brookswood Secondary hosted its first Cram the Cruiser food drive event in partnership with the Langley RCMP and school district.
“There’s a real sense of learning empathy and the spirit of giving, and seeing beyond yourself is really important – that’s part of the social-emotional learning that we try and embed into a lot of our curriculum,” said vice principal Kendall Sewell.
Langley RCMP officers arrived at the school around 7 a.m. near the front doors so students and parents could drop off donations as they headed to class on Thursday, Dec. 7.
Const. Jari Koskelainen, with the youth section of the Langley RCMP, said he was pleasantly surprised to see the turnout and a mix of boxes and bags full of donations.
“Very positive energy today, and we’re very pleased to bring this to the community,” he said.

Anyone who donated a non-perishable food item could enter the raffle to win a $25 gift card to Tim Hortons. It was won by a Grade 8 student.
“I’m really proud of the community and that we do food and Christmas hampers for families, and it’s really neat to see how connected the community is,” Sewell commented.
“Everything’s becoming more expensive in this day and age, so let’s all do our part and remember our fellow citizens and our community and get out there to donate, volunteer, help somebody in need. Whatever we can, let’s do it, and have a great Christmas season,” Koskelainen concluded.
After the event, he drove the filled cruiser to drop off donations at the Sources Langley Food Bank.
