Surrey RCMP officers followed an alleged impaired driver for 15.6 kilometres down Fraser Highway Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 3, just before 1 p.m.

Officers responded to a report of a driver driving erratically, and police in an RCMP helicopter was “utilized to follow them at a safe distance,” explained. Cpl. Sarbjit Sangha with the Surrey RCMP.

The chase started in the 13900-block of Fraser Hwy, just north of the Surrey Memorial Hospital.

Langley RCMP assisted Surrey when the driver crossed into the Township, and police followed him to the Willowbrook Shopping Centre around 1:30 p.m.

“He went into the mall, but officers were able to track him and arrest him,” Sangha said.

Almost a dozen police officers in marked and unmarked vehicles arrived near the front entrance of the mall near the Tim Hortons restaurant.

At about 2 p.m., a Mercedes sedan was towed from the site.

The driver remains in custody and faces multiple charges:

- Flight from police

- Breach of release order

- Possession of a forged identity document

- Driving while prohibited

The driver will be appearing in court once a date is decided.
