No known cause of the fire at an abandoned house near 76 Avenue and 202A Street in Langley Thursday afternoon (Aug. 31).

Russ Jenkins, deputy fire chief of the Langley Township fire department, said the house was abandoned and slated for development.

“There was no power or gas at the house,” he told the Langley Advance Times.

At about 3:40 p.m., fire crews responded to reports of a house fire near Langley Events Centre.

Jenkins said the fire was contained and put out after about two hours.

Police were also on scene to secure the area and assist the fire department, said Cpl. Crag van Herk, media spokesperson with the Langley RCMP.

“There is some indication of squatters occupying it at one point, but no obvious indication of criminality,” he said.

On social media, Langley and Surrey residents reported seeing the plume of smoke from Clayton Heights and Langley City.
