On Tuesday, Oct. 10, the 20-year-old cut-down date in the Western Hockey League, Vancouver Giants announced that 2003-born defenceman Carson Haynes was released and later claimed off waivers by the Regina Pats.

WHL teams are only allowed three 20-year-old players after the October deadline.

“This was a difficult decision to make,” said Giants General Manager Braclay Parneta.

“Carson is a terrific young man and a solid defenceman. We are happy he’s able to continue his WHL career in Regina.”

The three 20-year-olds remaining on the Giants roster are forward Skyler Bruce, defenceman Logen Hammett and goaltender Brett Mirwald.

Haynes was a third round draft pick by the Giants in 2022.

The Taber, Alta. product has played in 102 career WHL games, split between the Tri-City Americans and Giants, tallying four goals and 22 assists.

The 6-foot-3, 190 lb. left-shot defenceman was previously drafted by the Americans in the third round, 58th overall, during the 2018 WHL prospects draft.

Last season with the Giants, Haynes totaled 15 points, three goals and 12 assists, in 50 games.

This season, he played four games with the Giants, recording two assists.

Regina Pats, after claiming Haynes, put their 2003-born forward Zack Stringer on 20-year-old waivers.
