Giants’ Mirwald nets goalie of the week honours

Vancouver Giants goaltender Brett Mirwald has been named WHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending Dec. 17, 2023. The announcement was made Monday, Dec. 18.

Mirwald, 20, won twice in two starts, both against the Seattle Thunderbirds, putting up a near-perfect .98 goals against average and .965 save percentage.

He started the week with a 31-save performance against the Tbirds, allowing only one goal and earning first star in a 2-1 overtime victory.

Then, in Vancouver’s final game before the break on Sunday, Mirwald turned aside 24 of 25 shots, and was named third star for his efforts.

A native of Saskatoon,Mirwald is 11-13-1-0 in his first season as the Giants’ starter, sporting a 3.31 goals-against average and .907 save percentage, playing the second-most minutes of any goaltender (1541), facing the second-most shots (914) and recording the second-most saves (829). He has already played more minutes this season than all of last season (1447).

Mirwald was acquired by the Giants in June of 2022 from the Moose Jaw Warriors for a conditional sixth round pick.

He was originally selected by the Warriors in the seventh round, 154th overall at the 2018 WHL Prospects Draft and was previously named a Second Team All-Star for the 2018-19 season in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA League.

The Giants (13-18-2-0) are fourth in the B.C. Division and will return to post-holiday action on Dec. 27 with a home game against the division rival Victoria Royals at 7 p.m.
