Veteran basketball coaches to share expertise at free clinic in Langley

January event organized by Vancouver Bandits and Basketball B.C.

Vancouver Bandits and Basketball B.C. will jointly host a free-to-attend coaches clinic at Langley Events Centre (LEC) on Sunday, Jan. 7.

During the three-hour clinic, the instructors – current Vancouver Bandits head coach and general manager Kyle Julius, former Canadian senior women’s national team head coach Allison McNeill, and assistant coach Mike McNeill – will focus on player skill development and coaching strategies.

The in-person clinic will run for three hours on Jan. 7, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Interested members of the basketball community are invited to register for January’s coaches clinic by visiting www.thebandits.ca/basketball-resources.

All participants must register online to attend and receive relevant clinic information.

Among his accomplishments, Julius led Canada to a gold medal at the 2017 William Jones Cup, coached the Saigon Heat in the ASEAN Basketball League to its first two winning seasons and first-ever playoff victory, and led the Vancouver Bandits, as head coach in 2020, to the CEBL finals.

Allison McNeill, former head coach, Canadian senior women’s national team, guided the team to its first appearance since 2000 at the 2012 London Olympic Games, where the team advanced to the quarterfinals, equalling the best previous performance by Canada.

Mike McNeill was also head coach of Simon Fraser’s men’s basketball team from 1978-82, and former manager of coaching development for Basketball B.C.

Shawn Dheensaw, executive director of Basketball B.C, described the trio as “internationally seasoned coaches.”

“This coaching clinic is an excellent opportunity for coaches to enhance their knowledge, learn new techniques and engage with experienced coaches,” Dheensaw said.

Bandits team president Dylan Kular predicted “a day filled with learning, inspiration and fun.”
