Langley’s Gateway shelter opens ‘extreme weather response’ spaces due to cold weather

An extreme weather alert has been issued for Langley.

Gateway of Hope homeless shelter operated by the Salvation Army has opened up space to provide refuge from cold weather conditions.

The alert was issued Saturday morning, Jan. 6 by Cristina Schneiter, community representative for Langley Extreme Weather Response, “due to temperatures that are, or ‘feel like,’ 0 degrees Celsius and below.”

“If you are sleeping outside, please come to the safety of the shelter,” the notice said.

Anyone who requires shelter assistance after 9 p.m. was advised to call the RCMP at 604-532-3200 “and they will help you to a location.”

Environment Canada was forecasting temperatures below freezing Saturday night with fog patches developing overnight.

Gateway of Hope, at 5787 Langley Bypass, operates from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m.

Gateway is wheelchair accessible and pet-friendly. Dinner, breakfast and lunch and are provided. Laundry service and showers are available. Gateway’s warming centre is closed.
