Indigenous-inspired jersey design unveiled by Vancouver Bandits

Funds raised from their sale will benefit Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society

A Indigenous-inspired Vancouver Bandits jersey will debut this Sunday, June 25th when the Langley-based Canadian Elite Basketball League team takes on the Calgary Surge at Langley Events Centre at 5 p.m.

They were officially unveiled Thursday, June 22.

The new jerseys were designed by Kwantlen First Nation artist Jeff Dickson in advance of the club’s Indigenous Celebration Night on the Sunday and to commemorate National Indigenous History Month.

Dickson also designed the new Bandits logo, unveiled last year.

A Bandits release noted the jersey’s primary colour is orange, which aligns with Orange Shirt Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and the Bandits’ classic brand colour.

To learn more about the design and significance, Bandits’ coaching staff, front office and roster visited Kwantlen First Nation on Friday, June 16, to meet with Chief Marilyn Gabriel, elders and council members, as well as the Dickson family.

“The Bandits are honoured to wear this jersey throughout the rest of the 2023 CEBL season in an effort to contribute to the celebration of Indigenous culture and to promote stronger connections with Indigenous culture and history across Canada,” the Bandits announcement said.

A percentage of the proceeds of each jersey purchased will be donated to the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society (LFVAS) following the 2023 CEBL season.

As well, proceeds from the 50/50 draw at the June 25th Bandits game versus Calgary will also go to LFVAS, which provides a wide variety of services for all ages, including personal and educational support and family programs.
